百寺巡礼
五木寛之さんの著書「百時巡礼 第三巻 京都１」を読んで、真如堂の存在を知りました。正式には鈴聲山（れいしょうざん）真正極楽寺といい、比叡山延暦寺を本山とする天台宗のお寺です。
涅槃図と涅槃の庭
御本尊には阿弥陀如来が祀られています。お参りのあと涅槃図を見せていただきました。お寺の方に丁寧に解説をいただきましたが、お釈迦様の死を嘆く、動物、鳥、昆虫がびっしりと沢山描かれています。珍しいそうですが、川や海の魚介類までいます。（写真撮影は不可）
この涅槃図が有名ですが、奥には涅槃の庭が1988年に作庭されています。入寂したお釈迦様を弟子たちが取り囲んで悲しんでいるモチーフです。東山を借景に取り入れた壮大なスケールのお庭です。
しばらく縁側で涅槃の庭を楽しませていただきました。このお寺は三井家との縁が深く様々な物が寄進されていて、あちらこちらに三井家の家紋を見つけることができます。襖絵も鈴木松年の描いた松の間をはじめ、見ごたえがありました。
隨縁の庭
庭好きにとって、もう一つ見逃せないのは重森千青氏が2010年に作庭した「隨縁の庭」。先に見た「涅槃の庭」とは趣も色合いもゴロっと変わりますが、その場にすごくマッチした雰囲気を醸しだしています。是非、奥まで見に行っていただきたいです。（完）

Shinnyodo (English)
A Pilgrimage to One Hundred Temples
I learned about the existence of Shinnyodo when I read Hiroyuki Itsuki’s book “A Pilgrimage to One Hundred Temples Volume 3: Kyoto 1”. It is a temple of the Tendai sect of Buddhism, whose head temple is Hieizan Enryakuji Temple.

The main deity enshrined is Amitabha Buddha. After visiting the temple, I saw the Nirvana painting. The painting was carefully explained to me by the temple staff. It was filled with animals, birds, and insects mourning the death of Buddha. There are even fish and shellfish from the river and the sea, which I heard is very rare. (Photography is not allowed.)
This painting of Nirvana is famous, and the Nirvana Garden in the back of the temple was created in 1988. The motif of the garden is that of Buddha’s disciples surrounding him, grieving over his death. The garden is on a grand scale with the Higashiyama mountains in the background.
I sat on the porch for a while, enjoying the garden of nirvana. This temple has a deep connection with the Mitsui family (One of Japanese Largest Conglomerate family), and many things were donated to the temple from them, and the Mitsui family crest can be found here and there. The sliding door paintings were also worth seeing, including the Pine Room painted by Matsutoshi Suzuki.
Garden of contemplation
Another must-see for garden lovers is the “Garden of Contemplation” created by Mr. Chisao Shigemori in 2010. It is a drastic change in taste and color from the Nirvana Garden we saw earlier, but it creates an atmosphere that matches the place very well. I highly recommend that you go deep inside of the building to see this garden.

Un pèlerinage vers cent temples
J’ai appris l’existence du Shinnyodo en lisant le livre de Hiroyuki Itsuki “A Pilgrimage to One Hundred Temples Volume 3 : Kyoto 1”. Il s’agit d’un temple de la secte Tendai du bouddhisme, dont le temple principal est le temple Hieizan Enryakuji.
L’image du Nirvana et le jardin du Nirvana
La principale divinité consacrée est le Bouddha Amitabha. Après avoir visité le temple, j’ai vu la peinture du Nirvana. Le personnel du temple m’a soigneusement expliqué ce tableau. Elle était remplie d’animaux, d’oiseaux et d’insectes pleurant la mort de Bouddha. Il y a même des poissons et des crustacés de la rivière et de la mer, ce qui, d’après ce que j’ai entendu, est très rare. (Les photographies ne sont pas autorisées).
Cette peinture du Nirvana est célèbre, et le jardin du Nirvana à l’arrière du temple a été créé en 1988. Le motif du jardin est celui des disciples de Bouddha l’entourant, en deuil de sa mort. Le jardin est à grande échelle, avec les montagnes Higashiyama en arrière-plan.
Je me suis assis sur le porche pendant un moment, profitant du jardin du nirvana. Ce temple a un lien profond avec la famille Mitsui (l’un des plus grands conglomérats familiaux japonais), et beaucoup de choses ont été données au temple par eux, et l’écusson de la famille Mitsui peut être trouvé ici et là. Les peintures des portes coulissantes valent également la peine d’être vues, notamment la salle des pins peinte par Matsutoshi Suzuki.
Jardin de contemplation
Un autre incontournable pour les amateurs de jardins est le “Jardin de la contemplation” créé par M. Chisao Shigemori en 2010. C’est un changement radical de goût et de couleur par rapport au jardin du Nirvana que nous avons vu précédemment, mais il crée une atmosphère qui correspond très bien au lieu. Je vous recommande vivement de pénétrer à l’intérieur du bâtiment pour voir ce jardin.
