南大門の金剛力士像

東大寺の南大門にある金剛力士像は歴史の教科書で必ず習うと思うので、知らない人はいないはずです。日本人なら一度は見たことがある方が大多数でしょう。私も小学校3年生の時に大阪から遠足で来て以来、瞼に焼き付いて離れません。それほど、インパクトがあり、今でも見るたびに感動を覚えます。

阿形と吽形で世界の全てを表現

この南大門の２つの像は、向かい合って立っているのが特徴です。昭和の末から平成にかけて行われた大修理で、平安時代の創建当初から２つの像が向かい合っていたこと、そして鎌倉時代に造られた2つの像は70日程度で同時進行にて作成されたことが分かったそうです。ガイドの方は、口を開いた阿形は「あ」を表し、口を閉じた吽形は「ん」を表していて、サンスクリットのアルファベット（あるいは日本語の五十音）の最初と最後を表していて、この世の全てを表現していると説明する方も多いと思います。

スターウォーズとの意外な結びつき

ここでは、別のトピックスを紹介します。私もテレビ番組で知ったのですが、この金剛力士像は映画「スターウォーズ」に間接的な影響を及ぼしています。「スター・ウォーズ」完結編で活躍する日本人のCGモデラー、成田昌隆さんをご存知でしょうか。成田さんは証券会社にお勤めの時にアメリカ赴任後、退社して帰国せずに専門学校でCG技術をマスターしました。しかし、なかなか人を感動させる作品を完成させることができず、仕事の獲得で苦戦されていた中、日本での一時帰国時に、偶然、東大寺の金剛力士像を見て、作者の気迫や情熱を感じ、自らも情熱を込めた金剛力士像のCGを作成して、有名会社に自らを売り込んで転職に成功。その後、技術の高さが評価されて、スターウォーズの仕事に繋がっていきました。

この東大寺の２像は800年の時を超えて、現代の人間に感動を伝え、また、その感動を受けた人間が、世界中の人々に新たな感動を伝えています。そんなストーリーを今もつくり出す金剛力士像は、国宝に留まらず、世界の宝だと思います。（つづく）

Todaiji Temple (2) Kongorikishi Statues (English)

Vajrapani statues at Nandaimon Gate

The statue of Vajrapani at the Nandaimon Gate of Todaiji Temple is something you will surely learn about in your history textbooks, so there must be no one who doesn’t know about it. The majority of Japanese people have probably seen it at least once. I came here on a field trip from Osaka when I was in the third grade of elementary school, and ever since then it has been burned into my eyelids. It has such an impact on me that I am still moved every time I see it.

All of the world is represented by the “A” and “Un” forms.

The two statues at this Nandaimon gate are unique in that they stand facing each other. During the major repairs carried out from the end of the Showa period (1926-1989) to the end of the Heisei period (1989-2019), it was discovered that the two statues had been facing each other since the beginning of the Heian period (794-1185), and that the two statues made in the Kamakura period (1185-1333) were created simultaneously in about 70 days. Many guides explain that the open-mouthed “A” represents “A” and the closed-mouthed “Un” represents “Un”, the first and last letters of the Sanskrit alphabet (or the Japanese syllabary), and that they represent everything in this world.

The Surprising Connection to Star Wars

Here is another topic. I also learned from a TV program that this statue of Kongorikishi has indirectly influenced the movie “Star Wars”. Do you know Mr. Masataka Narita, a Japanese CG modeler who is working on the final part of “Star Wars”? Mr. Narita was working for a securities company when he was transferred to the U.S. He left the company and instead of returning to Japan, he went to a vocational school to master CG techniques. While he was struggling to get a job, he happened to see a statue of Kongorikishi at Todaiji Temple when he was temporarily back in Japan and felt the artist’s spirit and passion. He succeeded in changing jobs by selling himself to a famous company. Later, his high level of skill was recognized and led him to work on Star Wars.

These two statues at Todaiji Temple have transcended the passage of 800 years and conveyed their impressions to people of today, and the people who received those impressions have conveyed new impressions to people around the world. I believe that the Kongo Rikishi statues, which still create such stories, are not only national treasures but also treasures of the world. (To be continued)

Statues de Vajrapani à la porte Nandaimon

La statue de Vajrapani, située à la porte Nandaimon du temple Todaiji, est un objet dont vous avez sûrement entendu parler dans vos manuels d’histoire, alors il ne doit y avoir personne qui ne la connaisse pas. La majorité des Japonais l’ont probablement vu au moins une fois. Je suis venu d’Osaka lors d’un voyage d’étude lorsque j’étais en troisième année d’école primaire, et depuis lors, il est gravé dans mes paupières. Il a eu un tel impact sur moi que je suis encore ému chaque fois que je le vois.

Le monde entier est représenté par les formes “A” et “Un”.

Les deux statues de cette porte Nandaimon sont uniques car elles se font face. Le lien surprenant avec Star Wars

Voici un autre sujet. J’ai également appris dans une émission de télévision que cette statue de Kongorikishi a indirectement influencé le film “Star Wars”. Connaissez-vous M. Masataka Narita, un modéliste CG japonais qui travaille sur la dernière partie de “Star Wars” ? M. Narita travaillait pour une société de valeurs mobilières lorsqu’il a été muté aux États-Unis. Il a quitté la société et, au lieu de rentrer au Japon, il est allé dans une école professionnelle pour maîtriser les techniques d’image de synthèse. Alors qu’il se battait pour trouver un emploi, il a vu par hasard une statue de Kongorikishi au temple Todaiji lors de son retour temporaire au Japon et a ressenti l’esprit et la passion de l’artiste. Il a réussi à changer d’emploi en se vendant à une célèbre entreprise. Plus tard, son haut niveau de compétence a été reconnu et l’a amené à travailler sur Star Wars.

Ces deux statues du temple Todaiji ont transcendé le passage de 800 ans et ont transmis leurs impressions aux gens d’aujourd’hui, et les personnes qui ont reçu ces impressions en ont transmis de nouvelles aux gens du monde entier. Je crois que les statues Kongo Rikishi, qui créent encore de telles histoires, sont non seulement des trésors nationaux mais aussi des trésors du monde. (A suivre)
