川崎重工業の歴史を学ぶ
技術系の大学院で学んでいる留学生に対して、関西地区の近代化を学ぶプログラムの提供依頼を受けた時に、関西の代表的な企業として川崎重工の発展を調べてみることにしました。知り合いの川崎重工社員に、社史を学べる場所を聞いた時に教えてもらったのが神戸にあるカワサキワールドでした。
入口を入ると、創業者の川崎正蔵氏と事業経営の後継者として活躍された初代社長の松方幸次郎氏の紹介から始まり、川崎重工が時代の変遷に伴い、どのような事業展開を行ってきたかを、パネル、映像教材、模型などを時代順に紹介する方法で展示しています。
造船から鉄道、そして航空機へ
世界的にも急速に重工業が発展していた時代ですから、日本も欧米諸国にキャッチアップしようとする中、川崎重工業も造船、鉄道、航空機へと事業を展開していく様子が、よくわかります。戦後はヘリコプター、新幹線、工業プラントへの進出していきました。
2000年代を表すパネルの前には、ブルーインパルスが使用する航空機（T４）の模型が展示されています。10年ほど前に、一度だけブルーインパルスの飛行を見たことがあり、目の前で繰り広げられる飛行技術に驚きました。
英仏海峡トンネルを掘った掘削機
もう一つ、誇らしく展示されていたのが英仏海峡トンネル掘削機です。映像資料では、生前のダイアナ妃が訪日されたときに、まだ工場にあった掘削機をご覧になられている様子を見ることができました。世界一長い海底トンネルも、川崎重工の技術が役立っていました。
社史を辿ったあとは、留学生達に実物の製品やシミュレーターを手に触れて楽しんでもらいました。特にバイクのコーナーは展示も多く、好きな人にはたまらないかもしれません。（完）

Learn about the history of Kawasaki Heavy Industries
When I was asked to provide a program to study modernization in the Kansai region for international students studying in technical graduate schools, I decided to look into the development of Kawasaki Heavy Industries as a representative company in Kansai. When I asked an acquaintance of mine who worked for Kawasaki Heavy Industries where I could learn about the company’s history, he told me about Kawasaki World in Kobe.
Upon entering, visitors are introduced to the company’s founder, Shozo Kawasaki, and its first president, Kojiro Matsukata, who served as his successor in business management. Panels, video materials, and models are displayed in chronological order to show how Kawasaki has developed its business over the years.
From Shipbuilding to Railroads to Aircraft
It was a time of rapid global development of heavy industry, and as Japan tried to catch up with the West, Kawasaki Heavy Industries was expanding its business into shipbuilding, railroads and aircraft. After the war, the company expanded into helicopters, bullet trains, and industrial plants.
In front of the panel representing the 2000s, there is a model of the aircraft (T4) used by the Blue Impulse; I saw a Blue Impulse flight once about 10 years ago, and was amazed at the flying techniques that unfolded before my eyes.
The excavator that dug the Channel Tunnel
Another thing that was proudly displayed was the English Channel tunnel boring machine. In the video material, we were able to see Princess Diana, who was still alive when she visited Japan, looking at the excavator that was still in the factory. The world’s longest undersea tunnel was also made possible by Kawasaki’s technology.
After tracing the history of the company, the international students were able to enjoy touching the actual products and simulators. The motorcycle section in particular has a lot on display and may be a favorite for those who love them. (End)

Lorsqu’on m’a demandé de proposer un programme d’étude de la modernisation de la région du Kansai à des étudiants internationaux inscrits dans des écoles supérieures techniques, j’ai décidé de me pencher sur le développement de Kawasaki Heavy Industries en tant qu’entreprise représentative du Kansai. Lorsque j’ai demandé à une de mes connaissances qui travaillait pour Kawasaki Heavy Industries où je pouvais apprendre l’histoire de l’entreprise, il m’a parlé de Kawasaki World à Kobe.
Dès l’entrée, les visiteurs sont présentés au fondateur de l’entreprise, Shozo Kawasaki, et à son premier président, Kojiro Matsukata, qui lui a succédé à la direction des affaires. Des panneaux, des vidéos et des modèles sont exposés par ordre chronologique pour montrer comment Kawasaki a développé ses activités au fil des ans.
De la construction navale aux chemins de fer en passant par les avions
C’était une époque de développement mondial rapide de l’industrie lourde, et alors que le Japon tentait de rattraper l’Occident, Kawasaki Heavy Industries étendait ses activités à la construction navale, aux chemins de fer et aux avions. Après la guerre, l’entreprise s’est développée dans les hélicoptères, les trains à grande vitesse et les installations industrielles.
Devant le panneau représentant les années 2000, il y a une maquette de l’avion (T4) utilisé par le Blue Impulse ; j’ai vu une fois un vol du Blue Impulse il y a environ 10 ans, et j’ai été émerveillé par les techniques de vol qui se déroulaient sous mes yeux.
La pelleteuse qui a creusé le tunnel sous la Manche
Une autre chose qui était fièrement exposée était le tunnelier de la Manche. Dans le matériel vidéo, nous avons pu voir la princesse Diana, qui était encore en vie lorsqu’elle a visité le Japon, regarder l’excavatrice qui se trouvait encore dans l’usine. Le plus long tunnel sous-marin du monde a également été rendu possible grâce à la technologie de Kawasaki.
Après avoir retracé l’histoire de l’entreprise, les étudiants internationaux ont pu prendre plaisir à toucher les produits réels et les simulateurs. La section des motos, en particulier, présente beaucoup de choses et peut être le lieu de prédilection de ceux qui les aiment. (Fin)
