高徳院（鎌倉大仏）

久々にお会いした鎌倉大仏

2008年から4年ほど東京勤務の時代がありました。最初のゴールデンウィークに妻と鎌倉に行った際、高徳院を訪れ、鎌倉大仏に出会いました。大空の下にどっしりと座っている阿弥陀様の姿に感動したことを覚えています。

今回、10年以上の時を隔てて、再び高徳院を訪れる機会がありました。江ノ電の駅から緩やかな坂道を登って高徳院に到着しました。仁王門で左右の仁王さんに御挨拶したあと、いよいよ境内に入っていきます。秋の行楽シーズンでしたので、平日でしたが小学生の団体が次から次に訪問してきます。

大空の下の大仏さん

手水舎で手を清めてから境内を少し歩くと、すぐに青銅の大仏さんの姿を見ることができました。500年以上、風雪に耐えながら戸外に座っている阿弥陀様にお参りをしました。資料によると奈良の大仏よりも背丈が少し低いようですが、見ただけでは違いが判りませんでした。

奈良の大仏と違って、背中側を隠すものが何もないので、鎌倉大仏の背中に2つの窓（？）が空いているのを見ることができました。前回は、大仏の下に入って、大仏内の空洞を見ることができたのですが、今回はコロナ禍の影響で、中に入ることは出来ませんでした。

鎌倉は京に対抗していたのでしょうか

鎌倉時代が始まって、武士の都として鎌倉には、畿内と同じものが無くてはならなかったのでしょうか。奈良の大仏に匹敵する鎌倉大仏が建立されて、今に至ります。日本にはいろいろと大きな仏様の像が作られていますが、やはり、奈良と鎌倉の大仏さんは別格なように思います。次、いつ会えるかわかりませんが、鎌倉大仏に別れを告げて、お寺を離れました。（完）

Kotokuin Temple (Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture)

The Great Buddha of Kamakura, whom I met after a long time.

There was a time when I worked in Tokyo for about four years starting in 2008. When I went to Kamakura with my wife during the first Golden Week Holidays, we visited Kotokuin Temple and met the Great Buddha of Kamakura. I remember being moved by the sight of Amitabha sitting solemnly under the open sky.

This time, after a gap of more than ten years, I had the opportunity to visit Kotokuin Temple again. I arrived at Kotokuin Temple after walking up a gentle slope from the Enoden station. After greeting the Niou-san (guardian deities) on both sides at the Niomon gate, I finally entered the temple grounds. It was the fall holiday season, so even though it was a weekday, groups of elementary school students were visiting one after another.

The Great Buddha under the Sky

After purifying my hands at the watering place, I walked around the temple grounds and immediately saw the bronze statue of the Great Buddha, Amitabha, who has been sitting outdoors for over 500 years, enduring the wind and snow. According to the data, it is a little shorter than the Great Buddha in Nara, but I couldn’t tell the difference just by looking at it.

Unlike the Great Buddha in Nara, there is nothing to hide the back side of the statue, so I could see two windows (?) open on the back of the Great Buddha of Kamakura. Last time, I was able to go under the Buddha and see the cavity inside, but this time, due to the Covid-19, I was not allowed to go inside.

Was Kamakura competing with Kyoto?

When the Kamakura period began, did Kamakura, as the political capital city of the samurai, have to have the same things as the Kinai (Kyoto and its surrounding area)? The Great Buddha of Kamakura, which is comparable to the Great Buddha of Nara, was built and has been in existence ever since. There are many large statues of Buddha in Japan, but I think the Great Buddha of Nara and Kamakura are exceptional. I don’t know when I’ll see him again, but I said goodbye to the Great Buddha of Kamakura and left the temple. (End)

Temple Kotokuin (Kamakura, préfecture de Kanagawa)

Le Grand Bouddha de Kamakura, que j’ai rencontré après une longue période.

Il fut un temps où je travaillais à Tokyo pendant environ quatre ans, à partir de 2008. Lorsque je suis allé à Kamakura avec ma femme pendant les premières vacances de la Semaine d’or, nous avons visité le temple Kotokuin et rencontré le Grand Bouddha de Kamakura. Je me souviens avoir été ému par la vue d’Amitabha assis solennellement sous le ciel ouvert.

Cette fois-ci, après un intervalle de plus de dix ans, j’ai eu l’occasion de visiter à nouveau le temple Kotokuin. Je suis arrivé au temple Kotokuin après avoir monté une pente douce depuis la station Enoden. Après avoir salué les Niou-san (divinités tutélaires) des deux côtés à la porte Niomon, je suis finalement entré dans l’enceinte du temple. C’était la saison des vacances d’automne, et même si c’était un jour de semaine, des groupes d’élèves d’écoles primaires se rendaient visite les uns après les autres.

Après avoir purifié mes mains à l’abreuvoir, j’ai fait le tour du temple et j’ai tout de suite vu la statue en bronze du Grand Bouddha, Amitabha, qui est assise à l’extérieur depuis plus de 500 ans, supportant le vent et la neige. Selon les données, il est un peu plus court que le Grand Bouddha de Nara, mais je ne pouvais pas faire la différence rien qu’en le regardant.

Contrairement au Grand Bouddha de Nara, il n’y a rien pour cacher l’arrière de la statue. J’ai donc pu voir deux fenêtres ( ?) ouvertes sur l’arrière du Grand Bouddha de Kamakura. La dernière fois, j’ai pu passer sous le Bouddha et voir la cavité à l’intérieur, mais cette fois-ci, en raison du Covid-19, je n’ai pas été autorisé à entrer.

Was Kamakura competing with Kyoto?

Au début de la période Kamakura, est-ce que Kamakura, en tant que capitale politique des samouraïs, devait avoir les mêmes choses que le Kinai (Kyoto et ses environs) ? Le Grand Bouddha de Kamakura, qui est comparable au Grand Bouddha de Nara, a été construit et existe depuis lors. Il existe de nombreuses grandes statues de Bouddha au Japon, mais je pense que les Grands Bouddha de Nara et de Kamakura sont exceptionnels. Je ne sais pas quand je le reverrai, mais j’ai dit au revoir au Grand Bouddha de Kamakura et j’ai quitté le temple. (Fin)
