南禅寺① 庭園

石川五右衛門の絶景かな

三門の上で石川五右衛門が「絶景かな」と叫ぶ歌舞伎の芝居でお馴染みの南禅寺ですが、臨済宗の禅寺で別格とされるお寺だけあって、その庭も素晴らしいものが多いです。代表は名勝指定庭園となっている、方丈庭園。

横長に見えるのには訳がある

最初に見たときは、随分横に広い庭だなと思いましたが、実際の長さ以上に長く見える工夫をしているそうです。例えば、植栽も左が高く、右に行くほど背が低くなります。また、庭の奥に見える壁も、5本線が入っていますが、その間隔が左から右に行くほど狭くなっているそうで、遠近法を用いているそうです。目を凝らして見ても、私にはわかりませんでしたが。

次から次に庭が現れる

方丈の建物をぐるっと回りましたが、いろいろな庭が出てきます。最初は名前を確認しながら見ていて、如心庭、蓬莱神仙庭と名前も覚えようとしましたが、次から次に違う庭が出てくるので、こうして整理していても、どの写真がどの名前の庭か判明できなくなりました。

枯山水があったり、苔や緑の植栽がある庭であったり、あるいは龍安寺の石庭のごとく、白砂にいくつかの石を集めて、複数の島を作っている庭もあります。また、すこし大きめの石を建てた、荒々しさのある庭もあり、禅の庭のオンパレードです。一回ではすべてを楽しむことはできないくらい、沢山の庭です。

南禅寺垣に覆われて

茶室もあります。一つ気になったのは、茶室の前の竹垣です。名前を南禅寺垣というそうで、よく見ると、竹の編み方のパターンが独特です。写真を拡大して見ていただけると、おわかりいただけると思います。今日は、お庭でお腹がいっぱいになりました。（完）

Nanzenji Temple (1) Garden

It’s the spectacular view of Ishikawa Goemon.

Nanzenji Temple is familiar from the Kabuki play in which Goemon Ishikawa cries out, “Is this a beautiful view? The representative garden is the Hojo Garden, which is designated as a place of scenic beauty.

There’s a reason why it looks horizontal.

When I first saw it, I thought it was a very wide garden, but they have tried to make it look longer than it actually is. For example, the plants are taller on the left and shorter on the right. Also, the wall at the back of the garden has five lines, but the distance between them becomes narrower as you go from left to right, using perspective. I couldn’t see the difference even if I strained my eyes.

One garden after another.

I walked around the Hojo building, and I saw many different gardens. At first, I tried to remember the names of the gardens, such as Jyoshin-tei and Hourai-shinsen-tei, but as different gardens appeared one after another, I couldn’t tell which one was the garden with which name, even though I was sorting them out like this.

There are gardens with karesansui (dry landscape), moss and green plants, and gardens like the stone garden at Ryoanji Temple, where several stones are gathered in white sand to form multiple islands. There is also a rough garden with larger stones, a parade of Zen gardens. There are so many gardens that it is impossible to enjoy them all in one visit.

There is also a tea ceremony room. One thing that caught my attention was the bamboo fence in front of the tea room. It is called Nanzenji-gaki (Fence), and if you look closely, you can see the unique weaving pattern of the bamboo. If you enlarge the photo, you can see what I mean. Temple Nanzenji (1) Jardin

C’est la vue spectaculaire d’Ishikawa Goemon.

Le temple Nanzenji est connu grâce à la pièce de théâtre Kabuki dans laquelle Goemon Ishikawa s’écrie : “Est-ce une belle vue ? Le jardin représentatif est le jardin Hojo, qui est désigné comme un lieu de beauté scénique.

Il y a une raison pour laquelle ça a l’air horizontal.

Quand je l’ai vu pour la première fois, j’ai pensé que c’était un jardin très large, mais ils ont essayé de le faire paraître plus long qu’il ne l’est en réalité. Par exemple, les plantes sont plus hautes sur la gauche et plus courtes sur la droite. De même, le mur au fond du jardin comporte cinq lignes, mais la distance entre elles se réduit au fur et à mesure que l’on va de gauche à droite, en utilisant la perspective. Je ne pouvais pas voir la différence même en forçant mes yeux.

Un jardin après l’autre.

Je me suis promené autour du bâtiment Hojo, et j’ai vu de nombreux jardins différents. Au début, j’ai essayé de me souvenir des noms des jardins, comme Jyoshin-tei et Hourai-shinsen-tei, mais comme différents jardins apparaissaient l’un après l’autre, je ne pouvais pas dire lequel était le jardin avec quel nom, même si je les triais comme ça.

Il y a des jardins avec des karesansui (paysage sec), de la mousse et des plantes vertes, et des jardins comme le jardin de pierres du temple Ryoanji, où plusieurs pierres sont rassemblées dans du sable blanc pour former de multiples îles. Il y a aussi un jardin brut avec des pierres plus grandes, une parade des jardins zen. Il y a tellement de jardins qu’il est impossible de les apprécier tous en une seule visite.

Couvert par la clôture de Nanzenji

Il y a également une salle de cérémonie du thé. Une chose qui a attiré mon attention est la clôture en bambou devant le salon de thé. Elle est appelée Nanzenji-gaki (clôture), et si vous regardez de près, vous pouvez voir le motif unique de tissage du bambou. Si vous agrandissez la photo, vous verrez ce que je veux dire.
