青い空にパームツリー
青い空に向かって、真っすぐに伸びるパームツリー群。一見すると、カリフォルニアにでも来た雰囲気ですが、これは写真の切り取りで、実は大阪の堺の海に近い場所で撮影したものです。天気がいいと、実に気持ちがいい風景になります。
今回、堺まで来たのは日本最古の木造洋式灯台を見るためです。2021年のゴールデンウィークも相変わらずコロナ禍で、大阪は緊急事態宣言が発令されていたため、県境を越えての移動を控えていました。それでも、こんな天気の良い日に家でじっとしていることはできず、妻と車で出かけてきました。
150年も前の灯台
この灯台は1877年に築造されて、高さは11.3mあります。その後、約90年間、堺港に出入りする船の安全を守ってきましたが、周辺の埋め立ても進んできたため、1968年にその役目を終えています。1968年は私の誕生した年に当たり、50年以上も使われない灯台が保全されてきたことに驚きます。
老朽化したものを約20年近く前に保全修理したそうです。そのため、優美な白い姿を今も見ることができ、今も堺のシンボルの１つとして大切に保存されています。残念ながら内部は非公開です。
背景に南蛮貿易船の壁画
この灯台の背景にある工場の壁には、南蛮貿易時代の船が何艘も描かれています。この灯台が活躍時代とは、まったく異なる時代なのですが、堺が日本史の中で輝いていた頃のイメージと重なり、私にとっては、この壁画に白い灯台が、すごくマッチしているように感じました。（完）

Lighthouse in Sakai
A group of palm trees stretching straight up against the blue sky. At first glance, it looks like you are in California, but this is a cropped photo, actually taken near the ocean in Sakai, Osaka. When the weather is nice, the scenery is really pleasant.
The reason I came to Sakai this time was to see the oldest wooden Western-style lighthouse in Japan. The Golden Week in 2021, as usual, was marked by the Corona disaster, and since a state of emergency had been declared in Osaka, we refrained from traveling across the prefectural border. Still, I could not sit still at home on such a beautiful day, so my wife and I drove out.
This lighthouse was built in 1877 and stands 11.3 meters tall. I was surprised to see that the lighthouse had been preserved after more than 50 years of disuse, as 1968 was the year of my birth.
The old lighthouse was repaired nearly 20 years ago. Therefore, its graceful white appearance can still be seen today, and it is still carefully preserved as one of the symbols of Sakai. Unfortunately, the interior is not open to the public.
On the wall of the factory in the background of this lighthouse, several ships from the era of the Nanban trade are painted. Although this is a completely different era from the one in which this lighthouse was active, it overlaps with the image of Sakai as a bright spot in Japanese history, and for me, the white lighthouse seems to be a perfect match with this mural. Phare à Sakai
Un groupe de palmiers qui s’étendent tout droit contre le ciel bleu. À première vue, on se croirait en Californie, mais il s’agit d’une photo recadrée, en réalité prise près de l’océan à Sakai, Osaka. Quand il fait beau, le paysage est vraiment agréable.
La raison pour laquelle je suis venu à Sakai cette fois-ci était de voir le plus ancien phare en bois de style occidental du Japon. La semaine d’or de 2021 a été marquée, comme d’habitude, par la catastrophe de Corona, et comme l’état d’urgence avait été déclaré à Osaka, nous nous sommes abstenus de traverser la frontière préfectorale. Néanmoins, je ne pouvais pas rester à la maison par une si belle journée, alors ma femme et moi sommes partis en voiture.
Ce phare a été construit en 1877 et mesure 11,3 mètres de haut. J’ai été surpris de voir que le phare avait été préservé après plus de 50 ans d’inutilisation, car 1968 était l’année de ma naissance.
Le vieux phare a été réparé il y a près de 20 ans. Par conséquent, son aspect blanc et gracieux est encore visible aujourd’hui, et il est toujours soigneusement préservé comme l’un des symboles de Sakai. Malheureusement, l’intérieur n’est pas ouvert au public.
Sur le mur de l’usine à l’arrière-plan de ce phare, plusieurs navires de l’époque du commerce Nanban sont peints. Bien qu’il s’agisse d’une époque complètement différente de celle où ce phare était actif, elle se superpose à l’image de Sakai en tant que point lumineux de l’histoire du Japon, et pour moi, le phare blanc semble s’accorder parfaitement avec cette fresque.
