八坂の塔

京都のシンボル

京都がテレビで紹介される際、五重塔が街中に現れてきます。そんなシーンによく登場するのが「八坂の塔」とも呼ばれる法観寺の五重塔です。高さは約46ｍになります。日本一高い木造の五重塔は、これも京都のシンボルである東寺の五重塔で、高さは54.8ｍです。

八坂の塔の界隈は観光客も多く、修学旅行生もたくさん訪れる場所です。皆さんの学生時代の写真を見返してみると、案外、この塔を背景に記念撮影している写真が出てくると思います。現在の塔は1440年に再建されたものです。それでも600年近く京都のシンボルとなっています。

浄蔵貴所の伝説

この塔で思い出すのは、浄蔵貴所という平安時代のお坊さんの話です。知る人ぞ知るスーパー超能力者で、様々な伝説が残っています。その一つに、あるとき八坂の塔が傾いてしまったらしく、このままでは倒れてしまうと大騒ぎになったそうです。その時に、希代の法力の持ち主である浄蔵貴所が呼ばれました。

大勢の見物人が見守る中、浄蔵貴所が現れ、傾いた等に向かって何やら願力をかけると、不思議なことに塔が自ら起き上がるように傾いた姿勢を立て直し、元通りにまっすぐにたったそうです。1000年も前の話なので、嘘か真かは深く追求しても仕方ありませんが、何か壮大なマジックでも使える人だったのかも知れません。そんな彼の供養塔が金閣寺にあります。ほとんど手を合わせている人がいないのですが、私はあることで救われて以来、必ず手を合わせるようにしています。

様々な物語やドラマの舞台にもなっている八坂の塔ですが、皆さんも何かエピソードをお持ちではないですか？（完）

Yasaka Tower

When Kyoto is introduced on TV, five-story pagodas appear in the city. The five-story pagoda of Hokanji Temple, also called “Yasaka-no-to,” often appears in such scenes. It is approximately 46 meters high. The tallest five-story wooden pagoda in Japan is the five-story pagoda of Toji Temple, another symbol of Kyoto, which stands 54.8 meters tall.

The area around Yasaka-no-to is a popular tourist destination, and is also visited by many students on school excursions. Looking back at photos from your school days, you will find, not surprisingly, photos of you taking commemorative photos with this pagoda in the background. The current pagoda was rebuilt in 1440. Even so, it has been a symbol of Kyoto for nearly 600 years.

This pagoda reminds me of the story of a monk from the Heian period named Jozo Kisho. He was a supernatural being known to all who knew him, and various legends remain. One of them is that one time the Yasaka Pagoda was said to have tilted, and there was a big commotion that it would fall down if it did not. At that time, Jozo Kisho, a man of rare magical power, was called in.

As many onlookers watched, Jozo Kisho appeared and made some kind of supplication to the leaning pagoda, which mysteriously rose up and stood straight again. But it is possible that he was a person who could use some kind of grand magic. There is a memorial tower for him at Kinkakuji Temple. I have always tried to pray there since I was saved by something that happened to me.

Tour Yasaka

Lorsque Kyoto est présentée à la télévision, des pagodes à cinq étages apparaissent dans la ville. La pagode à cinq étages du temple Hokanji, également appelée “Yasaka-no-to”, apparaît souvent dans ces scènes. Elle mesure environ 46 mètres de haut. La plus haute pagode en bois à cinq étages du Japon est celle du temple Toji, un autre symbole de Kyoto, qui mesure 54,8 mètres.

Les environs de Yasaka-no-to sont une destination touristique populaire, et sont également visités par de nombreux élèves lors d’excursions scolaires. En regardant les photos de vos journées d’école, vous trouverez, sans surprise, des photos de vous prenant des photos commémoratives avec cette pagode en arrière-plan. La pagode actuelle a été reconstruite en 1440. Malgré cela, elle est un symbole de Kyoto depuis près de 600 ans.

Cette pagode me rappelle l’histoire d’un moine de la période Heian nommé Jozo Kisho. C’était un être surnaturel connu de tous ceux qui l’ont côtoyé, et diverses légendes subsistent. L’une d’entre elles raconte qu’une fois, la pagode Yasaka aurait basculé, et qu’il y aurait eu une grande agitation pour dire qu’elle s’écroulerait si elle ne basculait pas. À ce moment-là, Jozo Kisho, un homme doté d’un rare pouvoir magique, a été appelé.

Sous le regard de nombreux spectateurs, Jozo Kisho est apparu et a fait une sorte de supplication à la pagode penchée, qui s’est mystérieusement relevée et s’est remise debout. Mais il est possible qu’il s’agisse d’une personne capable d’utiliser une sorte de grande magie. Il y a une tour commémorative pour lui au temple Kinkakuji. J’ai toujours essayé d’y prier depuis que j’ai été sauvé par un événement qui m’est arrivé.
