西本願寺から東本願寺へ

西本願寺を訪問した後、歩いて東本願寺まできました。海外研修生を京都にお連れする際は、よく東本願寺の前を通る際に迫力のある御影堂門の姿を見て、研修生が「あれは何ですか？」と聞かれますが、実際に訪れるのは、私にとって今回が初めてでした。

やはり大きな阿弥陀堂と御影堂

境内に入ると、大きな阿弥陀堂と御影堂が並んでいます。これらは明治28年に再建されたそうです。それでも100年を超えた歴史を持っています。建物の中に入りましたが、やはり大きな空間に圧倒される思いがします。

御影堂にも入りました。この建物の方が、阿弥陀堂よりも一回り大きいです。屋根も二重になっています。宗教施設は、大きかったり、高かったりする方が、信者は畏敬の念をいだくものなのかと思う一方、仏さまとは間近に相対して、祈ったり慈悲を感じたりする方が信仰心を高める気もします。

阿弥陀如来と親鸞聖人

西本願寺と東本願寺の区別すらついていなかった私としては、とりあえずお参りできたことに感謝したいと思います。どちらも、阿弥陀如来様、親鸞聖人をお祀りし、大切にされていることが伝わってきました。

御参りが終わって、御影堂門を通って境内を出ようと歩き出すと、門の横に京都タワーの遠景が視界に入ってきました。京都に来ていて面白いのは、時代が異なる建築物を、時間を越えて同時に見られることです。お寺にいっても、年代の異なる建物や仏像が並んでいますし、そとに出れば現代建築と木造の時代がかった建物を同時に見ることができます。しかも、全く違和感がありません。京都の不思議な一面です。（完）

Higashi Honganji Temple

After visiting Nishi Honganji, I walked to Higashi Honganji. When I take overseas trainees to Kyoto, I often pass by Higashi Honganji Temple and see the powerful Mieido Gate and the trainees ask, “What is that?” This was the first time for me to actually visit the temple.

Entering the temple grounds, one sees the large Amida Hall and the Mieido Hall side by side. These were rebuilt in 1895. Even so, they have a history of over 100 years. I entered the building and was still overwhelmed by the large space.

I also entered the Mieido. This building is larger than the Amida Hall. The roof is also double-layered. I think that the bigger and taller the religious building is, the more awe-inspiring it is for the believers. On the other hand, I also feel that it is better to pray and feel the mercy of the Buddha up close and personal.

As someone who did not even know the difference between Nishi Honganji and Higashi Honganji, I am grateful that I was able to visit both temples. I could feel that both of them enshrine and cherish Amida Nyorai and Shinran Shonin.

After the visit, as I walked out of the temple grounds through the Mieido Gate, a distant view of Kyoto Tower came into view next to the gate. One of the interesting things about being in Kyoto is that you can see buildings from different eras at the same time, transcending time. Even if you go to a temple, you can see buildings and Buddhist statues of different ages side by side, and if you go outside, you can see both modern architecture and wooden period buildings at the same time. And yet, there is no sense of incongruity at all. It is a mysterious aspect of Kyoto. (End)

Temple Higashi Honganji

Après avoir visité le Nishi Honganji, j’ai marché jusqu’au Higashi Honganji. Lorsque j’emmène des stagiaires étrangers à Kyoto, je passe souvent devant le temple Higashi Honganji et je vois la puissante porte Mieido, et les stagiaires me demandent “Qu’est-ce que c’est ?”. C’était la première fois que je visitais réellement le temple.

En entrant dans l’enceinte du temple, on voit le grand Hall Amida et le Hall Mieido côte à côte. Ceux-ci ont été reconstruits en 1895. Malgré cela, ils ont une histoire de plus de 100 ans. Je suis entré dans le bâtiment et j’ai encore été submergé par le grand espace.

Je suis également entré dans le Mieido. Ce bâtiment est plus grand que la salle Amida. Le toit est également à double couche. Je pense que plus le bâtiment religieux est grand et haut, plus il est impressionnant pour les croyants. D’un autre côté, je pense aussi qu’il est préférable de prier et de ressentir la miséricorde du Bouddha de près et personnellement.

Moi qui ne connaissais même pas la différence entre le Nishi Honganji et le Higashi Honganji, je suis reconnaissante d’avoir pu visiter les deux temples. J’ai pu sentir que les deux consacrent et chérissent Amida Nyorai et Shinran Shonin.

Après la visite, alors que je sortais de l’enceinte du temple par la porte Mieido, une vue lointaine de la tour de Kyoto est apparue à côté de la porte. L’un des aspects intéressants de Kyoto est que l’on peut voir des bâtiments de différentes époques en même temps, transcendant le temps. Même si vous allez dans un temple, vous pouvez voir des bâtiments et des statues bouddhistes de différentes époques côte à côte, et si vous allez à l’extérieur, vous pouvez voir à la fois de l’architecture moderne et des bâtiments en bois d’époque. Et pourtant, il n’y a pas du tout de sentiment d’incongruité. C’est un aspect mystérieux de Kyoto. (Fin)
