平等院鳳凰堂④ 鵺（ぬえ）

宝物館を出た場所に、休憩できるスペースがあります。見学や土産物の購入には、時間をかける人と、そんなに興味のない人もいるので、早く出てきた人には、ここで休憩してもらいます。一度、イスラム教徒の方が、お祈りをしたいと申し出てこられたので、お寺の方に相談すると、この場所で許可をいただきました。お寺の寛容な対応に、驚くとともに、厚く感謝を申し上げました。

以前、宝物館の企画展で源頼政が取り上げられておりました。平安時代の末期、平治の乱の際に、平等院にて最期を遂げられた武将です。この武将には、もう一つの伝説があります。それは、夜な夜な都に現れた鵺（ぬえ）という怪物を退治したというお話です。

この鵺というのは、頭が猿、胴が狸、手足が虎、尾が蛇で構成されていた怪物と言われます。源頼政は、その鵺を弓で射て、その後、別の人間が太刀で仕留めたそうです。そして、頼政は鵺の体をバラバラに切り裂いてから、それぞれの部位を、笹の小船に乗せ、海に向けて流したと言われています。

これで話は終わらず、流された部位は、大阪湾に流れ込む前に、淀川の岸辺に打ち上げられたそうです。そこには、鵺塚があり、現在も供養されています。その場所をどこか調べてみると、なんと、私の住んでいる場所からすぐ近くでした。

大阪市都島区になりますが、地下鉄の駅から人も店も少ない商店街を南に歩くと、左手に供養塔らしきものが見えます。いままで全く気にもかけなかったのですが、その塚の由来となる物語を知ってからは、近くを通るたびに気になります。事の真偽はともかく、源頼政にも親しみを感じるようになりました。（完）

Byodoin Phoenix Hall 4: Nue (The White Sphinx)

There is a space where you can take a rest after leaving the Treasure House. Some people take a long time to visit and buy souvenirs, while others are not that interested, so those who come out early can take a break here. Once, a Muslim came to the temple and said he wanted to pray, so I talked to the temple staff and they gave him permission to do so there.  I was surprised at the temple’s generosity and thanked them profusely.

In the past, Minamoto-no-Yorimasa was featured in a special exhibition at the Gallery of Treasures. Minamoto-no-Yorimasa was a warlord who met his end at Byodoin during the Heiji Disturbance at the end of the Heian Period. There is another legend about this warlord, in which he conquered a monster called “Nue”, which appeared in the capital night after night.

This Nue is said to be a monster with a monkey for a head, a raccoon for a body, a tiger for arms and legs, and a snake for a tail. Minamoto-no-Yorimasa shot the Nue with his bow, and then another person killed it with a sword. It is said that Yorimasa tore the body of the Nue into pieces and then carried each part of the body on a small bamboo boat and floated it out to sea.

The story does not end there, but the parts were washed up on the shore of the Yodo River before flowing into Osaka Bay. There is a mound of sphinxes there, and they are still being memorialized today. I looked up the location of the mound, and to my surprise, it was very close to where I live.

It is in Miyakojima Ward, Osaka City, and if you walk south from the subway station along the shopping street where there are few people and stores, you will see what looks like a memorial tower on your left. I had never paid any attention to it before, but since I learned the story behind the mound, I have been curious whenever I pass by. Regardless of the truth of the matter, I now feel closer to Minamoto-no-Yorimasa. (End)

Hall du phénix du Byodoin 4 : Nue (Le Sphinx blanc)

Il y a un espace où vous pouvez vous reposer après avoir quitté la Maison du Trésor. Certaines personnes prennent beaucoup de temps pour visiter et acheter des souvenirs, tandis que d’autres ne sont pas si intéressées, donc ceux qui sortent tôt peuvent faire une pause ici. Une fois, un musulman est venu au temple et a dit qu’il voulait prier, alors j’ai parlé au personnel du temple et ils lui ont donné la permission de le faire ici.  J’ai été surpris par la générosité du temple et je l’ai remercié chaleureusement.

Dans le passé, le Minamoto-no-Yorimasa a fait l’objet d’une exposition spéciale à la Galerie des trésors. Minamoto-no-Yorimasa était un seigneur de guerre qui a trouvé la mort à Byodoin pendant la perturbation de Heiji à la fin de la période Heian. Il existe une autre légende sur ce seigneur de guerre, dans laquelle il a vaincu un monstre appelé “Nue”, qui apparaissait dans la capitale nuit après nuit.

Ce Nue serait un monstre avec un singe pour tête, un raton laveur pour corps, un tigre pour bras et jambes et un serpent pour queue. Minamoto-no-Yorimasa a tiré sur le Nue avec son arc, puis une autre personne l’a tué avec une épée. On raconte que Yorimasa a déchiré le corps du Nue en morceaux, puis a transporté chaque partie du corps sur un petit bateau en bambou et l’a fait flotter en mer.

L’histoire ne s’arrête pas là, mais les morceaux ont été rejetés sur les rives de la rivière Yodo avant de se jeter dans la baie d’Osaka. Il y a un monticule de sphinx à cet endroit, et ils sont encore commémorés aujourd’hui. J’ai cherché l’emplacement du monticule et, à ma grande surprise, il était très proche de mon lieu de résidence.

C’est dans le quartier de Miyakojima, à Osaka, et si vous marchez vers le sud depuis la station de métro, le long de la rue commerçante où il y a peu de gens et de magasins, vous verrez ce qui ressemble à une tour commémorative sur votre gauche. Je n’y avais jamais prêté attention auparavant, mais depuis que j’ai appris l’histoire derrière ce monticule, je suis curieux chaque fois que je passe par là. Quelle que soit la vérité, je me sens maintenant plus proche de Minamoto-no-Yorimasa. (Fin)
